Vermont, the only inland state of the six New England state of the six New England states, was the last to be settled. Is is the second largest in the region| yet the smallest population.

The backbone of Vermont is the glacial, granite Grenn Mountains, named for the evergrenns covering them. The northern reaches of these mountains, named for the evergreens covering them. The northern reaches of these mountains include the state’s loftiest peaks, several of which exceed 4,000 feet. Mount Mansfield, at 4.393 feet, is the tallest point in Vermont. Superb trails provide hiking and horseback riding in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. Summertime fishing and boating become wintertime ice fishing and ice boating. Downhill ski areas are scattered throughout the state. Sailing and boating are unforgettable experiences alng the 250-mile shoreline of Lake Champlain.

Arlington

Norman Rockwell’s hometown features the Norman Rockwell Exhibition and the Candle Mill Village.

Bennington

A major battle of the American Revolution, commemorated today by a 306-foot monolith, was fought here. See the Old First Church, the Park-McCullough House Museum, and the Bennington Museum.

Green Mountain National Forest

This large forest recreation area runs from the Massachusetts border to central Vermont. The 26-mile Long Trail, a hiking route, extends the length of the state. About 80 miles of it are within the forest.

Killington

This major winter sports area is proud to be home of the longest ski trail in the U.S and the longest ski lift in North America. Popular summer activities include a gondola ride to Killington Peak which offers views of five states and Canada. Ohter activities include boating, fishing, equestrian competitions, hiking, and music and theater festivals.

Lake Champlain

At 120 miles long and no more than 12 miles wide, this lake offers boating, camping, and ferries which connect Vermont with New York State. Lake Champlain Islands are a popular summer resort area. The Hyde Log Cabin in Grand Isle is considered to be the oldest existing log cabin in the nation.

Burlington

The largestcity in the state, situated on Lake Champlain, has the hands-on Discovery Museum, University of Vermont, Battery Park, and Ethan Allan Homestead and Ethan Allen Park.

Manchester

This venerable summer resort includes Southern Vermont Art Center, American Museum of Fly Fishing, spectacular Sky Line Drive, and Historic Hildene, the 412-acre estate of Robert Todd Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln’s son).

Middlebury

See the Sheldom Museum, which is filled with with 19th-century „Vermontiana”, the Vermont State Craft at Frog Hollow, and the UVM Morgan Horse Farm. Self-guided walking tours of Historic Middlebury Village art are available through the Chamber of Commerce Information Center.

Montpelier

State capital attractions include the State House, the Vermont Historical Society Museum, and the Thomas Waterman Wood Art Gallery.

Plymouth

The President Calvin Coolidge Homestead in Plymouth Notch has been completely restored to its early 20th-century apperance
